The Otherworld

It stood in the middle of a field, at Vullierens. Long dead, but still standing. In June 2022, I photographed it for the first time — it was my very first infrared shot. A few months later, it was cut down. This image is what remains.

Interaction The work comes to life through augmented reality, simply by pointing your phone via a private link.
The tree A dead oak at Vullierens, Vaud — felled since the photograph was taken.
Process Timelapse captured on the spot, looped seamlessly over 15 seconds.
Intention Keeping alive what no longer exists.

A fixed moment, and the movement that outlives it.

The sky above it that day was in constant motion — clouds arriving from behind, passing over the tree, continuing along the axis of the composition. Light came and went across the white wood. I was ready for a timelapse. What you see on the print is an image of that movement. What augmented reality reveals is the movement itself — a fifteen-second loop, unbroken, accessible from any phone with no app or account required, the link is provided with the certificate.

The frame was handmade by a local craftsman, Calandi in Lavigny, in Swiss wood treated with shou sugi ban — a Japanese charring technique that preserves the wood and gives it this black, burnt texture that echoes the tree.

Unique work. 100 × 150 cm. Digital and printed certificate of authenticity.
